Exhibition Recap: Hawks Win Red Army Battle

The Waterloo Black Hawks won the debut matchup during their trek to Russia, dropping CSKA (Central Red Army) by a 5-2 score Wednesday afternoon in Moscow.

Central Red Army struck first as Alexander Timiryov led a three-on-two rush from his own blue line and fired a shot over the shoulder of Eamon McAdam.  Vince Hinostroza canceled that score less than a minute later, receiving a puck across the slot from Pijus Rulevicius and spiking it past Maxim Tretyak, grandson of the former Soviet Olympic legend Vladislav Tretyak.  At 18:03, Taylor Cammarata put the Hawks ahead for the first time, when Justin Kloos found him open at the side of the net for a tap in.

CSKA notched the only goal of the second period during a five-on-three power play, when Timiryov knocked in a bouncing puck from the top of the crease.  The Russian team had five power plays and a penalty shot during the period.  Before being lifted as planned at a stoppage midway through the frame, McAdam helped the Hawks battle through two of the early shorthanded situations and turned away the penalty shot by Kirill Kovalevski.

Waterloo pulled ahead permanently on a power play of their own early in the third.  Kloos came out of the right wing corner and snapped in the eventual game-winning goal.  The Hawks padded the lead in the latter half of the period.  A give-and-go between Cammarata and Mark Friedman led to a cross-slot pass for Hinostroza to tap in his second of the game at 12:26.  Then Kloos struck for the second time, swiping a puck at the blue line and skating to the net for the score with 1:51 remaining.

The Hawks meet Dynamo Moscow Thursday for the final exhibition prior to the beginning of the 2012 Junior Club World Cup this weekend.
