Four unanswered goals helped the Waterloo Black Hawks rally past Norway’s National Junior Team Wednesday during the third game of pool play at the Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia.
Waterloo pulled ahead early as all three Black Hawks forwards on the ice went to the front of the net. Kevin Duane had the last touch, putting the puck past the right pad of goalie Steffen Soberg at 2:39. The Hawks could not build on the lead, despite good chances, and Team Norway tied the game with 1:55 left before intermission. After hitting the post, Iver Haaland retrieved his own rebound and slid the second shot into the net.
Jonas Knutsen and Jorgen Karterud combined to push Norway ahead by two goals in the opening minutes of the second period. Karterud set up Knutsen’s wrist shot which found the top corner just 32 seconds into the period. Roles were reversed less than three minutes later when a neutral zone turnover forced by Knutsen sprang Karterud into the zone for a goal from nearly the same spot in the right wing circle.
The Hawks batted back to even the game before intermission however, thanks to a pair of power play goals, both second chance opportunities after an initial point shot. Ian McCoshen’s blast set up Ryan Papa at 10:31, then with eleven seconds remaining before the horn, Mark Friedman created a rebound chance for Vince Hinostroza to convert at the opposite post.
A third consecutive power play score allowed Waterloo to reassume the lead 2:43 into the third period. As a rolling puck bounced up the slot away from the net, Zach Stepan found it and shoveled it the other way. Goalie Cal Petersen preserved the lead less than a minute later, turning away a Norwegian breakaway. Hinostroza iced the contest with his second goal, into an empty net score in the final minute.
Wednesday’s decision sets up a must-win game Thursday night versus the Omsk Hawks. The winning side should advance to the tournament semifinals, which begin Saturday.
