Last night the tournament finally began with the opening ceremony.
You could tell the people who put this tournament together really did a lot of planning, because the ceremony was amazing. It started out with four white curtains hanging from the scoreboard and on each curtain there was a projector showing a video of Russia’s history. After the opening video they announced each team with about a 5 second slideshow of buildings or landmarks unique to that country set to dramatic music played by a live orchestra.
Then they introduced each player from Belarus and Omsk and sang the Russian national anthem before their game began. All the while, the World Cup trophy was sitting at center ice. It was really a cool ceremony.
After what seems like forever, we finally got to play our first game tonight against Czech Republic. They came out flying in the first period outshooting us dramatically, but we held our cool and were able to pull out the win 5-0.
While it was a good win for the team, we have to stay focused as we play Belarus tomorrow at 3pm (that’s the time the game will be here).
